Performance programme note

When I discovered that there was a carillon within a mile or so of mac’s base in Cannon Hill Park I knew that this would be the ideal instrument on which to ring out the first notes of the new piece. Bells have been used throughout history to signal events and to communicate with the community so what better way to launch ‘The City Sings’. I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to write for this amazing and rare instrument.

This first version of ‘The City Sing’ written specially for the Bournville Carillon and its carilloneur, Trevor Workman, announces some of the themes which will appear later either sung or played on different instruments. But it is also a celebration of this fantastic instrument of bells.
